Communications Director
 
The Communications Director will oversee and manage the external communications and media relations of the Covington County Commission while building, maintaining, and preserving a positive public image for the County.  The position will be a full-time position with the County and report to the County Administrator.
 
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Manages media relations for the organization, which may include organizing press conferences.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive programs to publicize the organization and its interests.
  • Acts as the organization’s spokesperson when directed to do so and responds to members of the media in a timely manner; composes, reviews, and/or distributes press releases.
  • Prepares and/or reviews and approves public communications regarding the County.
  • Prepares and/or oversees external, public-facing communication and branding in various online and print platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and industry magazines.
  • Oversees or collaborates with other county employees in the development and maintenance of the organization’s website. 
  • Produces, reviews, and/or distributes print and video materials for public distribution.
  • Collaborates with the Commission and Department Heads to develop a public information strategy and guidelines for the County.
  • Assists the Commission and Department Heads in developing presentations, speeches, and other important public messages. 
  • Schedules and plans special events that are open to the public.
  • Serves as the Commission’s representative for public events hosted by local charities or civic organizations.
  • Develops and maintains positive professional relationships with members of the media.
  • Develops, implements, and adheres to the communications budget.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to write in a journalistic style that is customary for external publications.
  • Excellent understanding and deployment of effective public relations techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to offer sound media relations advice to the Commission and Department Heads.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience in these fields.
  • Three to five years of experience in public relations, communication, or related field required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
